Science is something kids can do. They can study literature but writing a book is not something most kids (or adults) will ever undertake.

TIME For Kids Big Book of Science Experiments: A Step-By-Step Guide (Time for Kids Books, 2011) by the editors of Time for Kids magazine, is a 192-page hardcover book of science experiments kids can do with stuff found around the house or purchased at the hardware or grocery store.

With more than 100 different projects this book can keep kids busy for hours. Days even. Maybe an entire summer of science experiments. The book is divided up into sections for Earth Science, Life Science, Physical Science and Technology & Engineering.

Each experiment has background information, a list of supplies, step-by-step instructions, ways to vary the experiment and a short explanation called “The Science Behind It.” For some of the experiments there is an additional section called “Science Fair Tip” to help kids modify the presentation. Very handy.

The book is aimed at 9- to 12-year-olds who could easily work independently from the book, as the writing level is right at their level. In fact, the book is an excellent exercise in reading to learn and following directions.

Working independent of an adult will give kids many opportunities to read carefully and follow written instructions. For that alone this book is a valuable resource, as well as the scope and complexity of the experiments being at the fourth grade to seventh grade level.
