For every 100 kids entering the 9th grade in Arizona, only 76 will graduate. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix are working to help kids stay on track and graduate on time through its program, Be Great: Graduate, which is sponsored by The University of Phoenix Foundation.
The program, which is being piloted this year at the Peoria and Avondale Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix locations, focuses on early intervention to lower Arizona drop-out rates. Be Great: Graduate is targeted toward fifth through eighth graders who are considered to be at risk for dropping out of high school.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix are looking for qualified volunteers to spend one hour weekly after school or in the evening mentoring a child who is in danger of school failure. Training, program materials and on-going support is provided for the mentors. Be Great: Graduate will run from August 1, 2012-July 31, 2013.
For more information about the program and how to get involved, visit www.bgcmp.org or contact Donna Martin at dmartin@bgcmp.org or (602)954-8182.
