Naming your baby in the digital age

Local social media pros have some advice about naming your baby. “Google the name before you name your child,” says Devon Adams, an East Valley high school teacher, online community college professor and father to a 5-year-old daughter. He learned the hard way—after he and his wife had named their daughter—that someone had already used the name for an Internet domain that is, well, more than a bit unsavory. Adams was one of four panelists who participated in a recent educational event for parents sponsored by Raising Arizona Kids and Social Media Club Phoenix(smcphoenix.com). Another perspective on baby naming came from panelist Calie Waterhouse, Internet Community Manager for Skateland in Glendale and the mother of three children ages 10 to 15: “Go to howmanyofme.com, put in the first and last names and it will tell you how many people already have that name.” Once you’ve chosen a name for your baby, you might consider purchasing the corresponding domain address. Otherwise, by the time your child is old enough to want to use their name to create a website domain, the URL may not be available. Scottsdale-based GoDaddy.com recently was advertising URLs for as little as $6.99 a year. ![]() |
