Hometown: Born in New Haven, Conn. Lived in the greater New York City area during most of my childhood.
Number of years in the Valley: I first came to Phoenix in 1979 to take a job as a reporter at the Arizona Republic. Except for three years of law school at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, I've been here ever since.
Occupation: Partner in the law firm of Perkins Coie Brown & Bain.
Spouse: Karen Barr, publisher and editor of Raising Arizona Kids magazine.
Children: Two sons: Andy (23) and David (22). Andy graduated from Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, Calif. in May 2007 and moved to Washington, D.C., where he is working as a reporter for Politico. David is a senior at Whittier College in Whittier, Calif. He spent his fall junior year semester at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, where he worked full time as an intern for the Scottish Parliament. David is playing lacrosse for Whittier this spring and will graduate May 22.
When I'm not at work: I enjoy hiking, biking, movies.
Favorite food: Peanut butter and jelly. Chocolate Cake. Cheeseburgers.
Favorite thing to do with my family: Travel, hike the Grand Canyon and play basketball with my sons.
Favorite thing to do by myself: Reading and learning about things I previously knew nothing about. Lying on the couch watching football.
Most people don't know this about me: In the 1970s, I was a prisoner in the Soviet Union. Well, sort of. During a college trip in January 1977, a friend and I were detained for a few minutes for jaywalking in Kiev and fined several rubles on the spot by the policeman who detained me. My guess is that our fines went directly into the policeman's pocket.
What I love most about Arizona: It is focused on the future and not on the past.
How I came to Raising Arizona Kids: I had no choice. My wife owns it.
