Learning and loving to give

As I was growing up in the Midwest, my mom taught us that helping others was important. She was a working, single mom who did her fair share of carpooling the three of us everywhere and yet still had time for the PTA, Christian Mothers and, of course, running the church festival. Wherever she was volunteering, you’d find my siblings and me — and not always with a great attitude, I must admit.

So how did I lose sight of what my mom taught me, this gift of giving? My life is full — owning a business with my husband, raising two girls, being a chauffer and chasing the American Dream. I didn’t think I had time for volunteer work right now. Fortunately for me, and for my children, another woman business owner in town gently reminded me why I should find time to give.

Eileen Rogers told me about her efforts to support the annual Baby Diaper Drive, which helps moms and babies at Homeward Bound. First, she asked me. Then she encouraged me. And then she inspired me. I, too, wanted to help. So I got our company involved. We held our first Baby Diaper Drive in 2005, collecting lots of diapers, wipes and formula.

My young daughters and I worked together to count and deliver the diapers. People from all over our community came to help — strangers, yet kindred spirits. It was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life to feel connected to others in the community, to work side by side to accomplish good and reach for a common goal. I truly felt part of something bigger than myself. My children were beside me learning and experiencing what this was all about for themselves. There was joy in the giving and energy, the laughter and wonder. We all received a gift that day.

Since that day, I have become friends with the Eileen, aka “The Diaper Lady.” She has quietly worked in our community, always mindful of her purpose: to encourage a grassroots opportunity that lets individuals, families and organizations share in the spirit of giving and fundraising while teaching others to do the same. She has taught me that the most amazing moments happen one person at a time, when we reach outside ourselves and invite others along with us. By simply teaching, learning and experiencing the value and gift of giving we pass on a legacy for others who come behind us to do the same.

In reconnecting with a value that was taught to me by my mother long ago, I’ve made new friends, found passion and have become inspired by the hard working moms at Homeward Bound who strive to make a better life for themselves and their children. I have encouraged and taught others about this gift of giving — my co-workers, children, Girls Scout troops, and my friends — all because someone gently reminded me and asked. And now, I am asking you.
