Zuckerman wins first state wrestling title for Raymond S. Kellis

Feb 19, 2010 -- Edward Zuckerman, a senior at Raymond S. Kellis High School in Glendale, won the 4A-I State Wrestling Championship in the 135-pound weight class, pinning every opponent he faced to cap off a 41-4 season. He is the school's first state champion in wrestling. Kellis had five other state qualifiers: Ruben Mendez, Trevor Southwick, Daniel Cluen, Aristotle Duenaz and Andre Rivera. Tim McMichael is the coach.

In other news from Kellis, junior Gilbert Romero, staff reporter for The Cougar Chronicle, won first place in the 13th annual journalistic writing competition hosted by the Arizona Latino Media Association at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The workshop and competition were held on Friday Feb. 12. Romero wrote an article that reported on the reluctance of undocumented immigrants in Arizona to participate in the 2010 national census.
