Suns shine light on talented young artist
March 5, 2010 — A sixth grade classroom from P.L. Julian Elementary School in Phoenix had lunch with some Phoenix Suns celebrities last week, thanks to the artistic talents of one student. The Suns challenged students from Roosevelt School District in Phoenix to create an art piece that featured a prominent person or key event in black history. Roderick McCray's artwork was selected as winner of the Black History Art Contest, awarding his class the opportunity to celebrate black history with Suns center Jarron Collins, Suns alumnus Mark West and The Gorilla. Collins and West recognized Roderick's artwork and discussed how black history has influenced each of their careers, along with the importance of it in our culture today. The luncheon was held at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel.
