Mesquite Junior High wins chess championship

Mesquite Mustangs Chess Team

March 9, 2010 — Mesquite Junior High School's Mustang chess team came out on top against other Gilbert junior high schools during the recent Mayor's Cup Championship. The Mayor's Cup began in 1999 and is a chance for the junior highs to get together and match wits in the game of chess. The championship team receives the Mayor's Trophy, which is a traveling award passed on each year.

The team was honored at a Town Council Meeting March 2. Winning team members include Taylor Courtland, Quaid Carroll, Daniel Marstein, Dylan Fedor, Nathan Phelps and Joseph Gardner. The team is coached by Michael Reading.
