Seton Catholic Prep seniors are named national merit scholarship program finalists
March 24, 2010 — The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test, which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year, and by meeting published program entry/participation requirements. Three Seton Catholic Preparatory seniors have been selected as National Merit Scholarship finalists.  Kyle Eddy is the son of Steven and Lisa Eddy of Chandler. He is involved in many school activities, including baseball, National Honor Society, Peer Training and Drama Club. This year, Kyle is the captain of the Varsity Baseball team. He is an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys hiking and fishing. He will be spending his family summer vacation exploring the ancient ruins at Machu Picchu in Peru before heading off to college in the fall. Kyle plans to be a pre-medical major at the University of Arizona Honors College; his goal is to become a physician.  Lena Nguyen is the daughter of Dungchi and Kim Nguyen of Gilbert. Lena began her high school career while still enrolled in middle school. John Hopkins Center for Talented Youth honored her with the designation of a “student of distinction” in the 7th grade. She has begun her post- high school endeavors during high school by attending several college-level seminars in several genres since the summer of 2006. The universities she has attended include Brown, Stanford and Harvard. Also named as a an AP Scholar, Lena has chosen to pursue her college education at Yale or Princeton, where she hopes to begin her professional writing career.  Erica Reyes is the daughter of Alberto and Nora Reyes of Tempe. Erica is a member of the Spanish Honor Society, National Honor Society, swim and dive teams (also club diving), a Seton Sentinel Ambassador, member of Peer Training and Multi Cultural club. She also plays the violin and piano and loves art. Last summer Erica was chosen to travel to New Zealand as a representative of the Sister City Program sponsored by the city of Tempe. Erica also has been recognized by the National Hispanic Recognition Program. She plans to attend Arizona State University and will pursue a rigorous course of study in liberal arts.
