Creative resistance to tobacco

SLOGO winnerMarch 31, 2010 — The Maricopa County Division of Chronic Disease & Tobacco Control recently awarded Jennifer Ford’s fourth-grade class at Meridian Elementary in Gilbert an Honorable Mention in its annual SLOGO (Slogan and Logo) Contest.

The contest is open to students in grades 4-8 in schools that are receiving the county's tobacco use prevention education program. SLOGO winners are judged on creativity and ability to deliver a simple anti-tobacco message for youth.

This entry certainly paints a vivid image. Its caption: Walking through a dark graveyard, a mummy’s eyes stare in horror at his trailing bandages catching fire from stray cigarettes as the poster text, written with lit cigarettes, reads, "Don’t get wrapped up in tobacco.”

Meridian Elementary, in the Gilbert Unified School District, is located at 3900 S. Mountain Rd. in Gilbert. 480-497-4032.
