Centennial freshman has a moo-ving experience in the arts

Jessica Lackey

By Brooke Mortensen

May 5, 2010 —  Centennial High School freshman Jessica Lackey has been named one of 30 finalists in Lucerne’s The Art of the Dairy Taste of Moo-sic Art Contest.

More than 9,600 students from all over the country submitted designs to contest, which was created to promote cross-curriculum achievement through art and music.

Lackey was encouraged by her art teacher, Chris Burhmann, to submit her concept design.

“I’m incredibly honored to get this award,” said Lackey. “I would like to thank my family and my art teacher for support. They were there for me from start to finish. It’s been an amazing experience and I think it’s a great idea for Lucerne to open up this contest for high school kids.”

This year’s challenge was to translate the art of music into visual art using the outline of a cow as their canvas. After finalists were picked, they had to transfer their design into a life-sized fiberglass cow

“I think it was a great thing; it was really interesting and different,” said Jodi Lackey, Jessica’s mom. “It was a challenge because painting was a new medium for her. She literally spent her entire spring break in the garage painting, but she really had fun with it.” The grand prize winner will receive $20,000 for their school, plus $5,000 for themselves and $5,000 for their teacher.
