Surf City – Part III

The view of Slyders Water Playground from our room.

Upon returning from our epic bike ride around Downtown Huntington Beach, Mylan and I met up with Evan and Solvay back at our room. They had spent the morning at the beach while Solvay boogie-boarded to her heart’s content. We all decided to while away the afternoon at Slyders Water Playground. Slyders is a new addition to the resort and one of our favorite hangouts when we visit for one reason – the water slide. More than she loves water, Solvay loves water slides! We entered the pool area and settled into our appointed cabana. In my opinion, there is no better way to hang poolside than with cabana access. These cabanas have uber-comfy lounge chairs (Evan, Mylan and I all fell asleep for a while to prove that!) , flat-screen televisions and wi-fi. Solvay needed some fuel for sliding so she had a mango smoothie from Shubee’s poolside cafe. Smoothies are also on her top favorite things list! She slid to her heart’s content while we relaxed – with the occasional snore coming from our cabana.

When we were done at the pool we dressed and headed down to Pete’s Sunset Grille for dinner. Pete’s is this casual restaurant with surfing memorabilia on the walls (it is actually  located on the former site of the famous Mallory Surf Board Factory) and this great “you are on vacation” vibe. During the summer they offer Friday Night Family Nights and Saturday Night Blues & BBQ. There is also a really cool take-home tiki cup if you order certain beverages. Now, Mylan is a bit of a picky eater (she has gotten better – I will give her that) and she absolutely loved the tacos she has had in the past. The only ones listed on the menu tonight thought were fish tacos…Mylan doesn’t do fish. She was bummed! “I was dreaming all day of those tacos!” she exclaimed sadly. As the waitress appeared, we mentioned the dilemma. “No problem!” she said, “The chef can make those for you – ground or shredded beef?” Yay! The rest of us ordered – Evan had a shrimp and pasta dish, I had the Kobe beef sliders and Solvay opted for chicken strips.  Everything was very delicious and everyone could smell me coming because of the garlic fries!

The next morning after breakfast (quick bite and some coffee at the Regency Club) we had to have one more walk on the beach before heading back home and to the 110 degrees that would be waiting for us! As we walked along the beach, the tide was really low, so we were able to do some seashell hunting. Also, it was fascinating to see all the little clams “dig” their way back into the sand after the waves left them stranded. If you picked one up quickly, you could also see what looked like a tongue sticking out of its shell. There were so many exposed when the waves would recede that we were nervous about stepping on them and hurting them! We meandered for about an hour and then decided to bid the ocean adieu until next time…
