6-year-old learns to love live theater at “Pinkalicious, The Musical”

It wasn’t hard finding something pink for my daughter, Lucy, 6, to wear as she glammed up to attend Valley Youth Theatre’s “Pinkalicious, The Musical” this past weekend. Shoes. Now, that was the real challenge.

Earlier in the week, our 5-month-old chocolate lab helped himself to Lucy’s only “nice” pair of shoes (that fit), leaving us with no option but to squeeze in a quick pre-show shopping trip—the perfect start to our mom-daughter day out.

I was clearly not the only mom who had suggested her daughter sport pink from head to toe; it was the mandatory attire for these young, excited theater-goers.

This was Lucy’s first time attending a live performance, so when it was time for Pinkalicous to step on to the stage, Lucy didn’t miss a beat. The intimacy of the venue made it easy for her to sit comfortably in her seat and watch the cast of characters sing, dance and escape from a very serious pink predicament.

Several acts and one intermission later, we found ourselves in the lobby, visiting with the cast and getting autographs. At that moment, I knew I was witnessing a memory for Lucy—one I hope she takes with her each time she attends a performance. She connected to a character she loves, recognized theatrical talent and experienced it all in a top-notch venue.

My only regret is that we didn’t share this experience with my son, Jack, who is 8. I underestimated the role of Peter, Pinkalicious’s younger brother, and the balance he brought to make this a performance the entire family would have enjoyed.

I guess there is still time to fix my mistake. Due to popular demand, this pink-a-rific musical has been extended to Mother’s Day, Sunday May 8, giving Pinkalicious the chance to make a pink enthusiast out of anyone.

If you go: Noon and 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 7 and 12:30 and 4 p.m. Sunday, May 8. 525 N. First St., Phoenix. $18. 602-253-8188 or vyt.com.

Next month: Valley Youth Theatre will stage Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” at the Herberger Theater Friday through Sunday, June 10-26.
