Starting to bond, from 9,000 miles away

A little boy in Ethiopia plays with toys from his Arizona soon-to-be mom.

I can’t show you the full pictures. I wish I could, because the faces are achingly sweet and enchanting.

But until a certain little boy and a certain little girl in Africa officially become members of the deGuzman family of Paradise Valley, Ariz., I can’t show their faces. I can’t tell you their names.

I got a new set of photos yesterday from Keri deGuzman, who was delighted to see that her babies are growing, healthy and happy. “I sent them those toys,” she said, “so it was so nice to see them playing with them. [We’re] getting closer…..!!!”

Her excitement is mounting as May 11 approaches. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, that is the date Keri and her husband Brian will officially become the parents of these two babies. A judge in a courtroom far away will conduct a hearing. All the necessary paperwork will be signed and filed and it will be done.

And finally, after more than a year of waiting, Keri and Brian can book a flight to Ethiopia. And so can I.

For now, all I can share is the photos of these hands. So you can know, as I am starting to profoundly know, that all of this is real. These babies are coming home. And I will share their journey.
