High school students interested in an in-depth look at healthcare careers have until Sunday, May 1, to apply for Midwestern University’s eight-day Health Careers Institute for High School Students, which takes place on the university’s Glendale campus July 9 through 18.

The free program is open to high school juniors and seniors. Forty-eight participants will be selected based on their interest in health professions as demonstrated by school coursework, volunteer activities, transcripts, a recommendation letter from a teacher and an application essay.

Students accepted for the hands-on program will participate from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Midwestern faculty and advanced students will teach workshops in anatomy, physiology and introductory skills for various health professions, with a special focus on how to prepare for college and what to expect from each profession.

Guest lectures will cover current medical topics, including emergency medicine, sports medicine, drug abuse, healthcare volunteer opportunities and more. Students will attend a medical field trip to Arrowhead Hospital in Glendale and participate in an interactive emergency medical services mock rescue scenario presented by the Glendale Fire Department.

Applications must be postmarked by May 1. 623-572-3353 or midwestern.edu/azhealthcareersinstitute.
