The Best Toys & Activities for Waiting Rooms, Restaurants and On-the-Go

Since having a newborn, I’ve found myself spending a lot more time in waiting rooms—and my 4½-year-old has been along for the ride. Between my follow-up midwife appointments, our baby’s pediatrician visits, or even accompanying my husband for a tire change, there are plenty of times when we need him to sit and wait while we’re filling out paperwork, talking with a doctor, or tending to his baby sister.

I’ve been on a mission to find fun ways to keep him occupied during those stretches, and these screen-free toys and activities have worked especially well for us:

This compact building set has been a fun choice when my son wants something hands-on. The pieces can be combined to create different builds, giving him something to work on independently while we wait.

While this one is geared toward babies and toddlers, my son still likes it! Its take-along design makes it easy to toss into a diaper bag, and the shape-sorting activity gives him a learning task to complete that he can do over and over again.
