Themed Birthday Ideas for Grown-Ups

As parents, we often go all out celebrating our kids’ birthdays—planning elaborate parties, baking cakes, decorating, and making sure their day feels extra special. But somewhere along the way, many of us stop celebrating our own birthdays with the same enthusiasm.

That was me for years. Other than the occasional dinner out with family, I hadn’t really done anything unique or special to celebrate my birthday. Last year, I decided to change that! After talking to a friend about it, she encouraged and helped me plan a themed “bring-your-own-board” birthday gathering and it was so much fun!

It got me thinking about all kinds of other low-pressure birthday themes that would be fun gatherings for adults to do with their friends. So if you’re looking for an easy way to celebrate your next birthday—whether it’s with friends, your partner, or a mixed group—here are a few ideas that prove grown-up birthdays deserve celebrating, too.

Boards & Board Games

This is what I did last year (minus the board games – although looking back, that would have been such a great add-on!). Ask everyone to bring a themed food board. Some ideas include a breakfast board, a fruit board, a dessert board, a cheese board, etc. Then set out a few board games, card games, or party games and let the competition begin.

TJs & PJs

This is one of my favorite cozy gathering ideas. Everyone wears their comfiest pajamas and brings a favorite Trader Joe’s item to share. From frozen appetizers and dips to desserts and unique snacks, the spread is always fun—and no one has to do all the cooking.

Chick Flicks & Chick-fil-A

Grab Chick-fil-A, pile up the blankets, and spend the evening watching your favorite romantic comedies or nostalgic movies. Bonus points if everyone votes on the movie lineup ahead of time.

Sip & Dip

Keep things simple by having each guest bring a dip—sweet or savory—to share, along with a drink that pairs well with it. You can also turn it into a pool party where everyone enjoys the dips, sips on something refreshing, and “dips” in the pool.

Fries With the Guys

Who says fries have to be a side dish? Set up a French fry bar with waffle fries, curly fries, sweet potato fries, and plenty of dipping sauces and toppings. Pair the meal with trivia, cards, or your favorite backyard games for an easy guys’ night!

Soup & Sweats

Perfect for cooler weather, this cozy birthday theme is all about comfort. Invite everyone to wear sweatpants, serve a few soups with fresh bread, light a few candles, and settle in for a comfort-TV marathon like Gilmore Girls or a favorite seasonal movie (Hocus Pocus, Practical Magic, or Bewitched are great watches for Fall!).

Steaks & Stakes

For a birthday that feels a little more elevated, combine poker or casino-style games with steak bites, hearty appetizers, whiskey tastings, or craft mocktails. It’s a relaxed way to enjoy great food while adding a little friendly competition.

Pints & Pizza

Ask everyone to bring a favorite local beer or craft brew to sample while ordering several pizzas to share. It’s casual, affordable, and works just as well for a backyard hangout or could be coordinated to do at a nearby brewery.

Bonfire & Bourbon

If the weather cooperates, gather around a backyard firepit with smoked meats, bourbon tastings (or bourbon-inspired mocktails), and classic s’mores. Add a playlist, a few lawn games, and good conversation, and you have a birthday that feels special without requiring much planning.
