Ready for a family day surrounded by towering saguaros, winding desert trails, wildlife and some of the most beautiful scenery in Phoenix? We’re giving one lucky Raising Arizona Kids reader a family 4-pack of general admission passes to Desert Botanical Garden!
Located in Papago Park, Desert Botanical Garden is a must-visit Arizona destination where families can explore the incredible plants, animals and landscapes that make the desert so unique.
Explore the Desert Together
With five trails winding through 55 acres, there’s plenty to discover at the Garden. Families can wander among cactus and succulents from around the world, look for native wildlife, learn how desert plants survive Arizona’s extreme conditions and take in beautiful views of the surrounding Sonoran Desert.
Each trail offers something a little different. Walk the Desert Discovery Trail to see iconic desert plants and watch for roadrunners and quail, head up the Sonoran Desert Nature Trail for mountain views, or stroll the Harriet K. Maxwell Desert Wildflower Trail to learn about the relationship between desert plants and pollinators like butterflies and hummingbirds.
Families can also explore the Center for Desert Living Trail, including edible garden beds, a giant sundial and sensory garden, or visit the Plants & People of the Sonoran Desert Trail to learn how Indigenous peoples have used desert plants for food, fiber, shelter, art and medicine.
Plenty for Kids to Discover
This isn’t a “look but don’t have fun” kind of garden! Desert Botanical Garden offers family-friendly ways to make exploring more interactive.
Kids can pick up a Desert Guardians Activity Booklet at Admissions and work their way through puzzles, scavenger hunts and activities while learning about desert plants and animals. Seasonal Discovery Stations offer additional hands-on opportunities to learn from Garden volunteers.
The Garden also offers a variety of tours and activities throughout the year, including docent-led experiences, birding opportunities and self-guided audio tours. Programming changes seasonally, so there’s often something new to discover on a return visit.
And don’t forget the Cohn Family Butterfly Pavilion! During its seasonal run, families can get an up-close look at thousands of butterflies while learning about their life cycle and the important role they play in the desert ecosystem. The fall Butterfly Pavilion opens Sept. 26 and is included with general admission.
Throughout the year, Desert Botanical Garden also hosts rotating exhibits, family programming, seasonal experiences and special events, giving Arizona families plenty of reasons to visit again and again.
