Teens can apply now for the Arizona Education Department’s Student Advisory Council

The Arizona Department of Education wants to hear student voices on its new Student Advisory Council. Applications are due Monday, Sept. 16 for students in grades 5-12 who want to participate.

Arizona students in grades 5-12 can apply to be members of the Arizona Department of Education’s first Student Advisory Council. The deadline to apply is midnight on Monday, Sept. 16.

“Our hope is that we have the chance to hear directly from students and elevate their voices and concerns as we consider policy proposals,” says Richie Taylor, communications director for the Arizona Department of Education. “Students are the ones that are so often directly impacted by the policies that the state makes.”

Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman.

The purpose of the Student Advisory Council is to support Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman’s work to improve K-12 education in the state. Fifteen students will be chosen for the panel, and members will serve from October this year through July 2020. All meetings will take place in Phoenix, but students across the state can participate in the meetings via phone or video chat.

“We want to make sure that we hear from students that are outside of the urban area, and we are going to make accommodations for webinars and other ways to join the meetings for our rural students,” Taylor says.

Applicants must be full-time students in Arizona in good academic standing. Students who are home-schooled are eligible, and students of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Student Advisory Council members will represent their schools in meetings and be a part of conversations about standardized testing, technology, school safety and curriculum. The first meeting is scheduled for 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22.

Students who apply must email 1-2 letters of recommendation from their peers to sophia.mayberry@azed.gov or mail them to Arizona Department of Education, Atttn: Sophia Mayberry, Bin No. 2, 1535 W. Jefferson St., Phoenix, AZ 85007.

Finalists will be contacted for an interview between Sep. 23-29, and students who are chosen for the council will be notified on Friday, Oct. 4. More information about applying can be found here.
