Children’s Museum of Phoenix takes summer camps virtual with Camp in a Box

Museum leadership leaves open the possibility of concurrent in-person camps in July

Camp in a Box can be be picked up curbside or will hand delivered by museum staff.

The Children’s Museum of Phoenix will offer a virtual camp experience this summer with Camp in a Box, designed for children ages 4-10.

The summer-camp-at-home experience will run in weekly sessions throughout June and July. If the museum can safely reopen, its staff will run onsite camps concurrently with virtual camps in July. A reopening date has yet to be decided as museum leadership continues to monitor the COVID-19 situation.

“With the virtual school year wrapping up, we all need to keep our kids busy and engaged in fun learning — so we’re excited to open our camps virtually,” said Children’s Museum CEO Kate Wells in a statement. “Our Camp in a Box virtual camps will give kids super engaging, fun play experiences at home. It’s going to be like having a little slice of the Children’s Museum come to you!”

Each Camp in a Box will include an instruction guide, a schedule, project supplies, art materials, and access to virtual content that fits in with weekly camp themes. Virtual content will include camp counselors leading campers in different activities throughout the day, including movement, STEM activities, storytime, creative projects and more. Boxes can be picked up curbside or week or can be hand delivered to registered campers.

Each item in each box will be cleaned with a disinfectant by a staff member wearing a mask and gloves so parents can feel safe about the cleanliness of the items being provided.

Five days of virtual content will be provided for each week of camp. Content will be prerecorded so campers can work at their own pace, pausing the video as needed. There will also be opportunities for campers to pop in for some live virtual content with staff and special guests.

“We hope that our camps will give kids the playful experiences that they need to learn and grow and give parents some time for themselves, knowing that their children are engaged in a fun-filled camp experience in the comfort and safety of their own home,” Wells said.

Cost is $129 per box per week for non-members, and $99 per box per week for members. Home delivery adds $25. Register here.
